GLS (GAP Level Sensor)

Lack of molten metal level control during mold filling is the main reason for aborting continuous cast which use automatic level control. The inductive sensors generally used have a measuring range of only 40 or 50 mm. Consequently, the mold must be filled without regulation, with plugs fixed open. If for any reason, the filling speeds of the molds differ too much, the cast must be aborted to ensure safety. This happens when the delay is too long between the first mold and the last mold reaching the desired level.

The solution for the mold filling problem is to regulate the level as soon as metal enters the mold. This requires a sensor with a larger measuring range, around 200 mm.

The GLS (GAP LEVEL SENSOR) is based on an inductive sensor fixed on a vertical moving mechanical system. This allows the measuring range to be increased up to 200 mm with the help of a microcontroller calculation and controlling the mechanical position of the actuator.
